THE FREWIN CUP

The Frewin Cup is 9F Squadron's Inter-Flight competition in Honour & Memory of the Late

Flt Lt Ron Frewin MBE RAFVR(T) Rtd.

who sadly passed away in 2000.

Flt Lt Ron Frewin MBE RAFVR(T) Rtd. was a former Squadron Commander of over 30 years & was the London Wing Chairman after he retired. While in command, his Squadron broke many records with the highest Gold DoE's awarded, Dacre Sword & Broach Winners, parading 200+ cadets and won the most Lee's Trophies (Best Squadron in ATC) any single Squadron has won to date. Most importantly he had a huge influence in the training of cadets & was mentor to two of the current staff here at 9F, Sergeant Ricky Cybuch & Sergeant Chandon Paul as well as many other members of Staff & VR(T) officers scattered around London & South East Region that had first started their ATC careers as cadets at 444 (Shoreditch) Squadron.

The Frewin Cup was created & designed to keep our cadets & NCO’s on their toes constantly assessing their performance & achievements whilst maintaining our high standards. It is also an excellent way in which the Squadron shows recognition for all the hard work cadets put in every 6 months.

The Frewin Cup is 9F Squadron’s Inter-Flight competition awarded to the “best performing Flight” and constantly takes place throughout a season ending in a fortnight long competition between all the Flights within our Squadron. Each season is 6 months long with a Winter & Summer season. During the last 2 weeks, Head-to-head competitions are held between Flights in Drill, General knowledge, Aircraft Recognition, First Aid, Field Ex/Night Ex, and various sports & challenges to name but a few.

Points are given to individual cadets in each Flight for sporting & academic achievements, attendance, uniform standards, event participation & Squadron representation which are tallied & added up on the Frewin Cup league table.

Every month, the highest points earned by a single cadet is awarded "Cadet of the Month".

The competition was initially set up to improve the cadets achievements & performance and also enable them to develop a hunger to do well & win.

We end each season in The Frewin Cup competition with a field excercise between the Flights & various competitions over 2 weeks.

Another aim for the Frewin Cup is to help cadets train for Wing Competitions and help with the selection process for each of the representative 9F Squadron teams.

Above all the Frewin Cup was put in place for fun, to give a sense of belonging, to inspire and the encourage the competitive nature of our cadets and to help them on their way “to the stars”, where they shall return.
