9F (Islington) Squadron Air Training Corps

"The spearhead of London Wing!"

BACKGROUND

No.9F (Islington) Squadron of the Air Defence Cadet Corps was registered by the Air League of the British Empire & was formed on the 22nd October 1938.

A warrant was issued by the Air League on the condition that the Rules & Regulations approved by the Air Defence Cadet Corps are carried out by all ranks of the unit. This warrant is on display at our Squadron Headquarters which was signed on the 30th Day of June 1939 under the Hand & Seal of the President of the Air League & their Secretary-General...Air Commodore J.A Chamier who also became the "founding father" and formed the ATC on the 5th February 1941. This was established by Royal Warrant by the Air Commodore-in-Chief HRH The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.

SQUADRON HISTORY

At the time of it's foundation 9F Squadron was the lead unit of the then "ISLINGTON WING".

This also comprised of...

...No.1386 Squadron (Northern Polytechnic, Holloway Road N7)

No.1865 Squadron (Hanley School, Sussex Way N19)

No.2003 Squadron (Gillespie Road School, Blackstock Road N4)

No.2004 Squadron (Popham Road School, Dibden Street, Essex Road N1)

The squadron's first Commanding Officer was Flight Lieutenant Frank M. Brownlee with its Chairman, Leslie Walker Esq., DL., J.P., L.C.C.

In the years following World War II, the Air Training Corps was reduced down in numbers from 500,000 cadets to the present estimated 42,000 cadets. This was due to social changes at the end of the war & a much lower need for training for the armed services. During this period the supernumery ISLINGTON WING Squadrons were reduced down to its lead unit, 9F Squadron. This formed part of the then known County of London Wing. Which later became London Wing when it was amalgamated with the then known City of London Wing.

THE PRESENT & FUTURE

With the start of the new millenium in 2000. Also marked the start of a new era at 9F. Flight Lieutenant Antony G. Lee RAF VR(T) was given command. In early 2005 two former cadets, Chandon Paul & Ricky Cybuch joined 9F as members of staff. Together during the following year they began to sow the seeds for 9F's phenomenal achievements, growing into one of London's most successful Squadron's that it is now today.

After 6 years in Command in January 2007, Flight Lieutenant Antony Lee RAFVR(T) resigned as the Squadron Commanding Officer to join as an operations officer at 600 (City of London) Squadron, Royal Auxilliary Air Force (RAF Reserves).
